The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Iran was reckless when it decided to shoot down Ukrainian civilian aircraft and lead to “devastating consequences”.
The shooting down of a Ukrainian plane that killed 176 people including passengers and astronauts was “a catastrophic disaster”, a senior Trump administration official said on 11 January, after Tehran admitted responsibility for mistaken commercial aircraft as cruise missiles.
” Iran finally made a disastrous mistake,” the official said after requesting anonymity. “The reckless act of Iran once again has devastating consequences.”
Earlier, Iran had claimed responsibility for the crash, saying the plane was shot down as a “catastrophic mistake”. The Iranian military also partly blamed the accident on the United States , saying that Iran had to raise its guard against President Trump’s threat to attack 52 targets in Iran.
According to Hajizadeh, commander of the Space Forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards, the Ukrainian plane was misidentified by the air defense system as a cruise missile. Because he could not contact the commander of the central air defense system to confirm, Mr. Hajizadeh decided to shoot down in 10 seconds of decision.
Flight PS752 of Ukraine International, carrying 176 passengers and pilots, was shot down shortly after leaving Imam Khomeini airport in Tehran, on the way to the Ukrainian city of Kiev.
